Myopia or short-sightedness is an eye disease that resultswhen the image of an object is focused not on the retina but before it. This leads to the blurring of the object situated at a distance. When we look at the objects positioned nearby, such a problem does not occur: a short-sighted person can see close-located objects quite well, that’s where the name of the disease comes from.
Myopia progresses due to the changes of size and shape of an eye-ball. From the normal spherical form it becomes more extended and oval. The number of patients grows of this disease is growing rapidly each year, and pupils and students are at higher risk because of constant exercising of their vision.
There are several major reasons that cause myopia:
– The disease is inherited
– Intensive visual stress
– Mistreatment of the eyes
– Malfunction of blood circulation
– Shortage of vitamins and nutrients
The basic symptom of near-sightedness is a difficulty in seeing objects at a distance: they seem blurred and indistinct. A person needs to narrow his eyes in order to see them well. Other symptoms include hyper fatigability and frequent headaches from the stress of using the eyes so much.
To be diagnosed a person must consult an ophthalmologist. The full check-up includes measurement of visual acuity, with or without correction, and other special examinations like refraction test, retinal examination, slit-lamp exam and a test of the muscles that move the eye.
There are different stages of short sightedness, according to which a specialist can choose the right lenses for correction. However, the disease can progress at an alarming rate, sometime even more than one dioptre per year.In this situation it may cause different and more complicated problems, and surgical intervention is needed in most of the cases.
However, it was also found that myopia sufferers could help to manage their condition with the use of sunglasses. The UV blocking properties of high quality models such as Ray Ban sunglasses helped to allay the degeneration, however this is only seen as a temporary fix.
